The Nov. 13 “Heroes Remembered, Service Honored” program commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War was excellent. As one of the 46 Korean War veterans from Richland County honored, I want to express my thanks to all who made it so special.
The speeches were delivered well. Raven Weston of Lower Richland High School gave a beautiful rendition of our national anthem and the Lower Richland Choral Ensemble performed “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” wonderfully.
I was in Korea as a member of the 2nd Infantry Division on July 27, 1953, when the Armistice was signed. The speakers made much of the veterans’ sacrifices. I’ll admit when I was in Korea I would have agreed. After 60 years, I look back and believe I received more from the experience than I gave. The Army gave me maturity and leadership skills that have helped throughout my life. I think everyone would benefit from service in our military.
Thanks again to James Brown, director of the Richland County Veterans Affairs Office, his staff, the Richland County legislative delegation and the many others for this recognition.
