A $2.3 million construction grant has been awarded to the Stone Pavilion nursing home for veterans, U.S. Rep. James Clyburn announced Thursday.

The Stone Pavilion, at 2200 Harden St., in Columbia, is one of three nursing homes for men and women who have served in the armed services statewide.

The grant from the U.S. Veterans Administration is to be used to renovate and upgrade the more than 40-year-old facility including upgrading the nurse call system, fire alarms, lighting, handrails, flooring, the roof and to reduce the threat of asbestos.

In making the announcement, Clyburn noted the growing number of military veterans in South Carolina’s Sixth District. A state budget statement in 2013 estimated there were 421,525 veterans in South Carolina and fewer than half the number of nursing home beds needed to meet their needs.
