Easley contractor admits stealing more than $33K from the VA

In federal court Tuesday, Tony Lee Holcombe admitted getting a ‘substantial income’ from a construction company he owned while on total disability. from the Veterans Administration.

Nearly four years ago, Tony Lee Holcombe, 61, of Easley was awarded disability payments from the Veterans Administration for non-service related impairment, IS attorney Bill Nettles said in a news release.

Although he was declared ‘permanently and totally’ disabled, the VA award came with a provision that Holcombe report any change in income or net worth to the VA. In federal court Tuesday, Holcombe admitted getting a ‘substantial income’ from a construction company he owned while on total disability.

The VA started investigating Holcombe after getting an anonymous tip in 2012. Investigators estimated Holcombe got $33,470.00 from the VA that he did not deserve.

Holcombe will be sentenced by federal judge Mary Lewis at a future date. He could face up to 10 years in jail and/or a fine of $250,000.
