Eight S.C. National Guard soldiers being deployed for one year in Afghanistan said goodbye to family and friends during a weekend departure ceremony.
Detachment 24, Operational Support Airlift Command, will be based at Bagram Airfield following a brief stay at Fort Benning, Ga.
The unit’s mission will be to fly civilian and military leaders to different outposts. They fly a C-26 twin turbo-prop, 14-passenger aircraft. It is the first C-26 to be deployed into combat operations, said Col. Paul Horry, state aviation officer for the S.C. Guard.
Chief Warrant Officer 5 Mark Kranz, commander of Detachment 24, said the unit is composed of six warrant officer pilots and two non-commissioned officers for scheduling.
