A first sergeant in the Third Army stationed at Shaw Air Force Base was killed when a log truck hit his pickup truck at a Sumter County crossing Monday afternoon.

The man was identified by Sumter County coroner Harvin Bullock as First Sgt. Bryant Riley, 40, of Elgin.

Riley was driving a Ford pickup north on St. Paul Church Road around 1:16 p.m. when the collision occurred, S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly said. He died at the scene.

While the highway patrol is still investigating the wreck, Kelly said they believe an International log truck heading east on US 76 went through a traffic signal and struck the pickup on the driver’s side.

Charges are pending against the log truck driver, Mack Gallishaw Jr., 67, of Sumter, Kelly said.
