The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Lexington-Richland District 5 schools are teaming up to gather drinks and snacks for military personnel who come through the Columbia Metropolitan Airport on the way to postings in South Carolina, to overseas deployments or homecomings.
An estimated 46,000 service members come through Columbia every year, the USO’s website estimated when the USO facility at the airport opened in 2010. That’s in addition to the 65,000 service personnel and their families stationed at military facilities around the state.
Donations of bottled water, sports drinks and single-serving snacks will be accepted at all Lexington-Richland District 5 schools from now until April 22.
