April 17 was one of the most incredible days in all my 84 years. That was the day I went on the Honor Flight to Washington to visit the World War II, Korean War and other important national memorials.
I cannot say thank you enough to everyone associated with this wonderful organization. The planning and coordination of every aspect of the trip was superb. There was absolutely nothing that I needed that wasn’t provided. All I had to do was enjoy the day.
And what a day. The weather was perfect. Everywhere we went there was a band and a huge crowd of people to cheer and welcome us. All kinds of people, from Girl Scouts to burly old motorcycle gang members, were there, just for us. Every one of them who could, thanked us personally for our service. I’ll have to say that all of this brought more than one tear to this old man’s eye.
Our nation is going through some difficult times, and the fact that so many people cared enough to raise the money and volunteer the time to send a bunch of white-haired, grumpy old veterans on this trip is proof that we still live in the best country on earth.
