On May 1, I attended a veterans appreciation day and the presentation of a Silver Star to Joe Tate of Elgin, for an award he should have received 46 years ago.
The Silver Star is the third-highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of any branch of the U.S. armed forces for valor in the face of the enemy. The Silver Star may be awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the armed forces, distinguishes himself or herself by extraordinary heroism.
Thank you and God bless you, Joe Tate, and all the other veterans, past, present and future, who stand ready or have made the ultimate sacrifice to maintain our freedom and defend our country. God bless America.
