U.S. military veterans looking to get their start in the civilian job market will have their chance at a jobs fair Friday at Shaw Air Force Base.

The base jobs fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carolina Skies Club and Conference Center. Representatives from 39 companies will be at the fair to meet prospective employees with a current or former military background.

The fair is geared toward service members who will soon be transitioning out of the military, as well as their spouses and dependents, veterans and civilian employees at Shaw. Base access is necessary to attend the jobs fair.

Shaw Airman and Family Readiness Center is organizing the event.

"We have several others throughout the year, but this is the main one," said Anna Lisa Richardson, work-life coach at the Readiness Center.

Last year's jobs fair attracted 400 people, Richardson said, and base officials hope to surpass that number this year. Nine colleges will have tables at the event, alongside national companies such as Bridgestone Tires, Lockheed Martin and Michelin, and local employers such as Thompson Industrial Services, Tuomey Regional Medical Center and SAFE Federal Credit Union.

The mission of the Readiness Center is to support service members and their families, with a special focus on spouses of those deployed overseas, and service members separating or retiring from the military. "We do workshops on how to write résumés, do job interviews and move into a civilian mindset — how to describe their skills in civilian terms," Richardson said.

Attendees at Friday's jobs fair are asked to dress professionally and bring several copies of their résumés, as well as any business cards or portfolios they may have.

"Research some of these companies ahead of time, so you know what they do and what positions they have available," Richardson said. "Then you can use your time more effectively and impress them with your knowledge."
