Maryland governor to help S.C. Democrat raise money

The Martin O’Malley tour of S.C. politics will continue next week when the Democratic Maryland governor attends a Washington fundraiser for state Rep. Bakari Sellers’ run for lieutenant governor.

The 2016 presidential prospect will join former S.C. Gov. Jim Hodges and state party chairman Jaime Harrison during a fundraiser Wednesday at the home of John Jameson, founder of campaign phone strategy firm Winning Connections. CNN first reported the news.

The suggested contribution for the event is $1,000. Sellers said O’Malley joining the fundraiser shows his campaign is gaining attention and momentum despite doubts about whether a Democrat can win statewide office in a Republican-leaning state.

O’Malley will headline a fundraiser for the S.C. Democratic candidate for governor, state Sen. Vincent Sheheen of Camden, in Charleston on Friday.

O’Malley is paying attention to South Carolina because it is the first Southern state to hold a presidential primary. He spoke to S.C. Democrats at a 2012 Democratic National Convention breakfast in Charlotte and was the keynote speaker at a state party issues conference last year in Charleston.
