Democratic superintendent candidates debate tonight

The four Democratic candidates for state superintendent of education will debate tonight on ETV from 7 to 8 p.m. The debate is the first of five that ETV and a group of S.C. newspapers – The State, The Greenville News, The Beaufort Gazette, The Island Packet of Hilton Head, The Sun News of Myrtle Beach, The Herald of Rock Hill and The Item of Sumter – are sponsoring.

Who? Appearing will be former state Education Department official Montrio Belton of Fort Mill, former S.C. Education Association president Sheila Gallagher of Florence, state Rep. Jerry Govan of Orangeburg and former S.C. State dean of graduate studies Thomas Thompson of Forest Acres.

What’s next? The GOP candidates for superintendent will debate Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m.

On deck: Subsequent debates will feature the Democratic candidates for the U.S. Senate seat by Republican Tim Scott, the GOP candidates for lieutenant governor and the Republican candidates for the Senate seat held by Lindsey Graham.
