Senate confirms new S.C. secretary of transportation
The state Senate voted unanimously Thursday to confirm Janet P. Oakley as South Carolina’s new secretary of transportation.
The vote was 37-0.
Oakley was nominated in April by Gov. Nikki Haley after former Transportation Secretary Robert St. Onge was charged with drunken driving and resigned.
Haley cited Oakley’s experience with federal transportation programs that could benefit South Carolina.
Oakley, who has more than 30 years of transportation policy experience, spent the past 15 years as director of policy and government relations for the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials in Washington, D.C. In that role, she worked closely with state transportation departments to develop policy.
