Sheila Gallagher and Tom Thompson, the two Democratic runoff candidates for state superintendent of education, will debate tonight from 7 to 7:30 p.m. on ETV. The debate is being sponsored by S.C. ETV and seven S.C. newspapers, The State, The Greenville News, The Island Packet of Hilton Head, The Beaufort Gazette, The Herald of Rock Hill Herald, The Sun News of Myrtle Beach and The Item of Sumter.
Who: Appearing will be Gallagher, a retired Florence educator and former S.C. Education Association president, and Thompson, a former dean at S.C. State University and a Forest Hill resident. Gallagher won 36 percent of the votes cast in the June 10 Democratic primary to 26 percent for Thompson.
Will there be other run debates? No.
Sallay Atwater, the second-place finisher for the GOP nomination to succeed Republican superintendent Mick Zais, declined to debate Molly Spearman, who finished first in the GOP primary.
Also, the two remaining Republican candidates for lieutenant governor, primary leader Henry McMaster and Michael Campbell, said their campaign schedules were too busy to debate.
What’s next? The primary runoffs will be held Tuesday. You can cast a ballot in the runoff only of the party whose June 10 primary that you voted in. For instance, if you voted in the June 10 GOP primary, you can vote only in the GOP runoff. However, if you did not vote June 10, you can vote in either party’s runoff.
