Democratic gubernatorial candidate Vincent Sheheen joined environmentalists Thursday in denouncing future oil drilling off the South Carolina coast.
At a rally on the State House steps, conservationists urged candidates running for office to fight offshore drilling in the wake of the disastrous Gulf of Mexico spill.
Republican candidates in the race for governor have expressed support for drilling off South Carolina, but Sheheen, a state senator from Kershaw County, said that is a bad idea. He stood with student environmentalists from USC, as well as representatives of the Conservation Voters of South Carolina and Friends of the Earth.
“We should not drill for oil offshore,’’ Sheheen said. “The science tells us there is not much potential for oil. It’s not worth risking the tourism industry in the state; it’s not worth risking the fragile resources in the state. That’s been my position since before the spill occurred in Louisiana.’’
