New Clemson University president Jim Clements has a bit of history to put behind him.
As president of West Virginia University, Clements’ Mountaineers pummeled the Tigers 70-33 in the 2012 Orange Bowl. (Wait a moment Gamecock fans before saying, “West Virginia just scored again.”)
Clements said he met with Clemson coach Dabo Swinney just before his new Upstate job was announced Monday and reported all is well.
“He is 20-3 since the Orange Bowl,” Clements said of Swinney Monday, before Clemson won another Thursday, destroying Georgia Tech. “I have liked Clemson football for two decades. Hopefully, they will take me in with open arms.”
Clements, who took West Virginia to the Big 12 conference from the Big East during his tenure in Morgantown, said he has no plans on moving Clemson out of the Atlantic Coast Conference, where the school is a founding member.
“The ACC is very strong,” he said. “The ACC is a great conference. I love the ACC.”
