From The Greenville News The two-year bipartisan budget agreement moving through Congress this week includes a provision from Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-Laurens, to allow oil and gas drilling in the western Gulf of Mexico.
The Obama administration negotiated a deal with Mexico to jointly open about 1.5 million acres to offshore drilling, but it needs congressional approval to take effect.
Duncan’s bill approving the drilling agreement passed the House in June. A similar version passed the Senate in October, but negotiations on a final bill were delayed.
House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., added most of Duncan’s bill to the overall government budget deal that was announced Tuesday.
