Boeing is now focusing on finding a new site to produce the new 777X jet after the company said the International Association of Machinists union rejected its final contact offer on Thursday night to land the project in the Seattle region.

From a Boeing statement:

The 777X site selection process has continued in parallel with this week's IAM meetings. In an overwhelmingly strong response from interested participants, Boeing has received proposals from 22 states, many of which submitted multiple sites for consideration. A total of 54 sites are now being evaluated in the next critical stage of the process.

Hard to imagine that South Carolina -- home of Boeing's only jet manufacturing plant outside Washington state -- was not among 22 states (44 percent of the U.S. total) submitting a bid.

State officials, including Gov. Nikki Haley, have been coy about making an offer . The state already has given Boeing $570 million in incentives.

Meanwhile, Boeing announced plans Thursday to shift research work to several locations including North Charleston with 300-400 new jobs, the company said.
