BUZZ: Former state Rep. Herb Kirsh taken off life support

Some sad news about a former state lawmaker from The State's sister paper, The (Rock Hill) Herald:

Former state Rep. Herb Kirsh, the Clover Democrat who was at one time the longest-serving member of the S.C. General Assembly, has been taken off life support machines at a North Carolina hospital, family said.

Kirsh, 84, suffered a series of falls starting in December and had been hospitalized and at rehabilitation centers since, said Kevin Kirsh, one of Herb Kirsh’s sons. After being hospitalized Saturday again at a hospital in Gaston County, N.C., doctors found blood clots in Kirsh’s legs and his body functions started to fail, Kevin Kirsh said.

... In politics Kirsh was defeated by Republican Tommy Pope in the 2010 elections, but before that was a legendary figure in South Carolina politics. A Democrat who repeatedly refused to switch parties despite his fiscal conservatism that earned him the nickname of “Representative No,” Kirsh was respected and beloved by members of both parties. Powerful political leaders routinely sought his favor and support.
