Meka Childs, formerly a deputy superintendent at the state Department of Education, announced her campaign for state schools' chief Wednesday.
Childs, one of six Republicans who have announced runs for their party's nomination, made the announcement on a video posted on YouTube.

"I know from first-hand experience the power of education to propel a person toward their dreams, or limit them to a life of simply surviving," she says on the video, detailing how she went from graduating from Lexington public schools to getting full scholarships to Duke University.
As a teacher at Dent Middle School, she said, "I learned a great deal about how the impact of policy passed at the state level affect teachers and students. These lessons have stayed with me."
