A day after Charleston Real Estate developer Pat McKinney dropped out of the Republican race for lieutenant governor, the candidate Mike Campbell announced he was not going anywhere.
Campbell will face Republican candidate Henry McMaster on June 24 in the runoff for the Republican nominee.
“We’re in this race,” Campbell said. “We’re in this race to stay in this race and to win it.”
McMaster had a 20 percentage point lead over Campbell in Tuesday’s primary.
“This is a new race so you can’t really focus too much on the percentage points of what happened last time as opposed to the race that we’re now in,” Campbell said, adding voter turnout will be much lower.
Campbell said that some of McKinney’s financial contributors now supported him. He also said that his campaign planned on having a TV commercial soon.
The winner of the runoff will face state Rep. Bakari Sellers of Bamberg in November.
