COLUMBIA Brandon Christina Armstrong, a Mount Pleasant painting contractor, filed a petition to run for U.S. Senate as an independent in November's election.
Armstrong submitted her petition with 12,595 signatures to the S.C. Election Commission on Monday. She is seeking the seat currently held by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-Charleston. Scott was appointed in 2012 by Gov. Nikki Haley after Jim DeMint resigned to run the Heritage Foundation.
Armstrong said she plans to take only small donations from contributors and run her campaign on the "least amount of money possible so I can encourage all citizens to feel empowered" that they, too, can run for office.
Also running are Democratic Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson and American Party candidate Jill Bossi of Tega Cay.
