Buzzing today

• The Senate's special Department of Social Services oversight panel meets at 9 a.m. For the first time since Director Lillian Koller resigned in June, the panel will hear testimony from social work experts and from a Social Services deputy director. The panel is expected to discuss the high number of cases and children some child-welfare workers manage.
• To the disappointment of business groups, raising the gas tax is not part of state Sen. Vincent Sheheen’s plan for meeting the state’s multibillion-dollar road needs, released Tuesday by the Democratic candidate for governor.
