Robert Polk of Columbia is the new S.C. fire marshal, Gov. Nikki Haley’s office announced Tuesday.

Polk previously served as fire marshal under Gov. Jim Hodges from 2000-2003 and is replaced Shane Ray on Aug. 1. Ray is now the executive vice-president of the National Fire Sprinkler Association.

The salary for the state position is $109,716.

“With over 40 years of fire service experience, Bert Polk is the right person to step in and continue the great work Chief Ray has been doing for our state,” Haley said in a news release. “His expertise will bring the right balance of common sense and knowledge of the necessary safety precautions to the position – two things that will serve the citizens and businesses of South Carolina extremely well.”

Polk most recently served as fire chief for the Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue District in Florida.

He has degrees in fire administration and management, has attended the executive fire officer program through the National Fire Academy. He is also recognized by the National Fire Protection Association as a certified fire protection specialist.
