You know your burgers.
As more burger joints have popped up, we asked you last week to name the best burger in the Midlands. With about four dozen responses, we’ve compiled some great suggestions to try next time you’re hankering for a burger.
Rockaway’s (2719 Rosewood Drive, 803-256-1075) got the most votes from readers, mostly for its pimento cheeseburger.
Rush’s (various locations) came in second, with many recommendations for its burger. “Rush’s gets my vote, easily, as the most tasty burgers in the Midlands,” reader Dave Miller of Columbia emailed. “Add to that the impressively speedy service and usually a smiling cashier—Rush’s has become my first choice for fast food.”
Other top vote-getters:
•Pawley’s Front Porch
(827 Harden St., 803-771-8001), whose burgers have been featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” on the Food Network, got several endorsements from readers.
(2013 Harden St., 803-256-0449)
(Harbison, Forest Drive and the Vista) “Five Guys burgers remind me of a burger cooked on the grill in the backyard,” emailed reader Padgett Mozingo of St. Andrews. “They are fast, affordable, consistent and they come with a big bag of perfectly cooked french fries that is big enough to share.”
(1801 Bush River Road, 803-798-3775)
(1809 Laurel St., 803-779-9681) got votes for its burgers, served in an authentic diner atmosphere.
(804 Meeting St., West Columbia 803-794-1929)
Many readers mention restaurants that are long gone from the burger scene, including Ed’s on Laurel Street, the Lobby Bar on Main and Gervais and Charlie’s Cue and Cushion.
Going out of town and hankering for a burger? Reader Mary Warriner of Columbia recommends stopping by the Haile Street Grill in Camden or Raley’s in Bishopville.
