Civil War moments in S.C. -- Feb. 2, 1864

The Presto -- inbound from Nassau on her third run through the Union blockade, with a cargo of shoes, liquor, blankets, bacon, ham and other goods -- attempts to slip by Union ships and into Charleston but runs aground at the mouth of the harbor.

Union batteries at Forts Wagner and Gregg, and Union monitors destroy the “splendid looking side-wheel steamer, with two smoke stacks and rakish masts,” according to a New York Times correspondent.
