Civil War moments in S.C. -- May 26, 1864

The USS Boston, a transport ship carrying Union troops and cavalry, runs aground on a submerged sandbar in the Ashepoo River, several miles above Bennetts Point.

Confederates, at nearby Fort Chapman, shell the ship, striking it more than 70 times. U.S. Navy gunboats arrive and evacuate the ship, which is set afire and sunk.
