Civil War moments in S.C. -- July 3, 1864

About 1,000 Union troops, leave Morris Island in small boats, and attack Fort Johnson, a Confederate fortification on James Island, inside Charleston Harbor.

They are repulsed by the fort’s 130 defenders. Like Sumter, Johnson is abandoned when Charleston is evacuated in February 1865.
