Hello, I was there. I considered my self an expert at the time because I'm from south Mississippi, and lived thru Camille in 1969.

I believed at the beginning that it would hit Charleston. One of my co-workers at that time was from Long Island. She was not use to storms ever making landfall. She thought that there was no chance of the storm hitting Charleston.

Well, I evacuated to a friend’s home in Goose Creek, near to where the co-worker from New York lived. After Hugo passed, the next day I carefully walked to her home.

She looked at me, shook her head a few times. I can't describe her face, but she was in awe of Hugo's destruction. I feel that everybody should experience the wrath of a Hurricane in a safe environment at least once.
