A babysitter was charged with child abuse after she shook an 8-month-old so hard that the baby suffered “extensive” brain injuries, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Carmen Flores Bautista, 38, was arrested early Wednesday and charged with great bodily injury to a child, sheriff’s officials said. She was placed in the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
Investigators responded to Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital Tuesday evening, according to Lt. Curtis Wilson, a sheriff’s spokesman. They determined that Bautista was babysitting the 8-month-old girl and “shook the baby violently, causing extensive brain injuries to the child.”
The baby was rushed to the hospital, where she remained in critical condition Wednesday with multiple contusions and a “severe” brain injury, Wilson said.
Bautista has no prior criminal record in South Carolina, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.
