Greenville hotels in midst of building boom

Make that four more hotels coming to downtown Greenville if developers’ plans hold.
Under the latest projects to surface, developers would break ground next year on downtown’s first boutique hotel, up to 140 rooms along River Street, and its first all-suites hotel, a Home 2 Suites by Hilton, in the North Main area.
Those would be on top of previously disclosed plans for a 144-room Aloft Hotel at the corner of Washington and Richardson streets and a 156-room Embassy Suites at RiverPlace.
The developer behind the boutique hotel, Raj Patel of Clemson, said he’s not ready to disclose a brand, but the property would be designed to make guests feel “they’re part of the community and part of the area.”
Patel, a former pharmaceutical industry researcher who owns five hotels in Clemson, Asheville and Columbia, said he plans to break ground on the $20 million project in February or March.
The eight-story building would house a restaurant as well as 120 to 140 hotel rooms, he said, and its entrance would be near the Centre Stage theater and the intersection of River and Court streets.
The hotel would share a public plaza at the corner of River and Broad streets with an eight-story apartment complex previously disclosed by Greenville developer Phil Hughes, Patel and Hughes said Monday.
At the corner of North Main and Elford streets, Sycamore Investment Group hopes to break ground for a $16 million Home 2 Suites by Hilton in May, said Yatish Patel of Greenville, a vice president with the company.
He said the 117-room hotel would include an outside pool and its own parking garage underneath.
The site fronts Main Street next to the Ogletree, Deakins law firm and is within walking distance of the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, formerly the Bi-Lo Center.
Sycamore Investment Group owns the Holiday Inn Express & Suites across North Main from the development site.
The Aloft Hotel was announced in September by McKibbon Hotel Group of Gainesville, Ga. It’s planned on top of a new city parking garage next to the two-tower One development.
At RiverPlace, Greenville developer Paul C. “Bo” Aughtry III said Monday he’s “ready to go out for bids” on his plans for a 156-room Embassy Suites.
It would go in a new 7.5-story building that would also house a rooftop restaurant and bar and a second restaurant in the hotel lobby, Aughtry has said.
He previously developed two other downtown hotels, the Hampton Inn & Suites at RiverPlace and the Courtyard by Marriott next to City Hall.
