A loaded pistol clip found outside Lady's Island Elementary School's cafeteria on Christmas Eve was dropped by a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputy participating in a training exercise there the day before, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said Thursday.

The magazine fell unnoticed from a pouch on a deputy's utility belt during a K-9 unit training exercise at the school Tuesday, Lt. Col. Bill Neill said. A janitor working at the school Christmas Eve found it near a metal container outside the cafeteria around 7:50 a.m., according to a report from the Sheriff's Office.

After the janitor called the Sheriff's Office, investigators were able to track down who the magazine belonged to by checking the inventory of each deputy involved with the training, Neill said.

Neill said the Sheriff's Office occasionally uses local schools when they are closed for realistic training scenarios. Beaufort County schools closed Dec. 20 for the Christmas holiday break.
