A family of four was rescued from St. Helena Sound after a kayaking trip went awry Wednesday, according to the Lady’s Island-St. Helena Fire District.
A 35-year-old woman called authorities about 8 p.m. from her cellphone, saying she, her 40-year-old husband, 12-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son were hanging onto one kayak in the water after their other kayak tipped over and sank, fire district spokesman Scott Harris said.
The woman was able to use her cellphone’s light to signal rescuers.
The family was located about an hour later, floating more than a mile from where they told authorities they were stranded, Harris said.
No injuries were reported, Harris said.
