In their Feb. 5 letter, “Common Core a collaborative effort to raise standards,” Jo-Anne Day and Jane Pulling gave a thorough explanation of the development and purpose of the national Common Core Standards.
Is it human stubbornness or the inability of some people to accept facts that make individuals (even the governor) refuse to support improvements that involve new ideas? Or is it something more paranoid: The feds aren’t going to tell us in South Carolina what to do. Never mind that there was collaboration among all possible stakeholders in the development in these standards.
If our citizens and leaders continue with this mindset, South Carolina will remain at the top of every bad list and the bottom of every good list. Common Core is common sense. Let’s hope that both prevail.
