Apparently, Sen. Tom Corbin thinks he has covered his bases now that he has “apologized” to Sen. Katrina Shealy about his tasteless, crude, offensive “joke” about women being “a lesser cut of meat.”
Actually, for many of us, he has only made his bumbling idiocy worse by saying after apology that Sen. Shealy “chose to be offended and make a big deal of all this.” Now he is blaming Sen. Shealy for making the choice to be offended. In addition, he implies that Sen. Shealy was probably the only one to be offended by his crassness.
Did it not occur to him that perhaps other senators were also offended, though they are all men? I greatly respect Sen. Shealy for making Sen. Corbin aware of her offense and refusing to take his remarks as a joke, thus initiating some kind of recognition by Sen. Corbin that an apology was in order. It would have been admirable had more senators spoken up about the insult as well.
Actually, an even better remedy might be for South Carolina to elect more female senators. That way Sen. Shealy would not be the lone wolf when future insults, directed at women, are carelessly and thoughtlessly hurled about.
