With warmer weather approaching, more Midlands residents will use the streets for fitness. It’s imperative that motorists and pedestrians alike know the rules of the road to avoid tragedy.
Runners, walkers and cyclists have exactly the same claim to roads as motorists, but they need to be smart. Runners and walkers should remain on the left side facing traffic. Cyclists should remain on the right side riding with traffic.
Groups should not split when a car comes — it just confuses the driver. Everyone should wear reflective gear. Headlamps and blinking lights are a good idea. Respect motorists by staying on the edge of the pavement, and always pay attention.
Drivers, you must share the road; it’s not just yours. A collision between you and a runner will end much worse for the runner. Give a little distance by easing out away from the runner if it’s safe to do so. Please don’t blind the runner with your bright lights, and leaning on your horn serves no purpose other than to confirm you are a jerk.
Can we work together so we all get what we need and no one gets hurt?
