Thursday letters: Columbia gaining new reputation

Imagine this: Columbia has just issued a shiny new brochure. It features all the usual and unusual attractions: Riverbanks Zoo, EdVenture, the State Museum, the Vista, Blue Sky’s quirky art and the entertainment district of Five Points.

Imagine this: Columbia has just issued a shiny new brochure. It features all the usual and unusual attractions: Riverbanks Zoo, EdVenture, the State Museum, the Vista, Blue Sky’s quirky art and the entertainment district of Five Points.

There is mention of Columbia’s ethnic festivals; the Greek Festival, St. Patrick’s, Jubilee and the others.

Certainly highlighted are the great institutions of higher learning and the wonderful schools of Richland District 1. There are other wonderful things going on that are too numerous to mention.

Also sprinkled throughout the pages are articles about the city’s alarming crime rate, the county election commission debacle, the intrigue and scandal at the Columbia Police Department, the infighting on City Council, squabbles between the governor and the Legislature.

The troubles seem to be mounting for the foreseeable future. Oh, I forgot to mention the cover of the new brochure: It reads “Columbia — Famously Dysfunctional.”
