The Affordable Care Act, recognizing states’ rights, gave the states the power to establish their own insurance marketplaces to serve their citizens. A state choosing not to exercise its right could give that right to the federal government.
Many states took advantage of their rights, establishing marketplaces that remedied the problems found in the act, such as keeping existing insurance policies.
Along with an army of Republican-controlled Southern states, Gov. Nikki Haley chose to fight the act by giving up her state’s right in hopes of defeating the act.
To me, this Republican army’s charge is the 21st century equivalent of Pickett’s Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg. Both were a disaster, inflicting heavy casualties on the rank and file. Now, Sen. Lindsey Graham is trying to recapture the states’ rights flag that Republicans freely gave to the federal government with another charge up Cemetery Ridge.
After Pickett’s Charge, Gen. Lee reportedly said: “All this is my fault.” He took responsibility. Neither Haley nor Graham seems to have the integrity to take responsibility for the disaster that they have wrought on the citizens of South Carolina.
