State Sen. Larry Grooms said his budget amendment was a way for the universities to make amends because, “You did something wrong” (“USC Upstate eliminates center tied to gay event,” Thursday).
In the discussion about gay-themed books and events at USC Upstate and the College of Charleston, we seem to have overlooked a couple of questions:
What did the universities do wrong?
Did they violate any laws?
Never miss a local story.
To protect our college students, some of whom are 30, 40 and 50 years old, from being exposed to issues of the 21st century, the Legislature plans to ensure that universities teach provisions and principles of the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Federalist Papers.
I suggest the Legislature include a study of censorship in Nazi Germany and the work of Joseph Goebbels. That will “learn” them. South Carolinians do not need to be protected by the Legislature; we need to be protected from the Legislature.
