Why do S.C. voters turn a blind eye to unethical practices by our legislators?
We have created a system in our state government that allows people in power to pretty much do as they please without fear of having to answer for violating the ethics our mothers taught us. We give the power to appoint the oversight committees to the leaders we want to keep watch over.
We give the speaker of the House and the president pro tempore of the Senate the power to appoint members of important committees, and we give legislators power to appoint judges, college trustees, Ethics Committee members and a host of others. If the legislative branch appoints the judicial branch, we end up with only two branches instead of three.
Meanwhile we voters continue to tolerate a government that benefits a few at the expense of thousands. That simply doesn’t make sense.
