Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin says that he did nothing illegal concerning his association with convicted former S.C. State University board chairman Jonathan Pinson. That may be true.

But given the testimony at the Pinson corruption trial, perception is another matter. Mayor Benjamin had numerous meetings with Mr. Pinson, and he did take a trip to Orlando.

To paraphrase the famous question at the Watergate hearings, “What did the mayor know, and when did he know it?” And, “What did the mayor do, and when did he do it?” The answers to those questions could be illuminating.
