Timothy Monroe Bledsoe wrote that he was offended by the public reaction to Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s release (“U.S. challenged by military issues,” July 9).

Sgt. Bergdahl voluntarily walked off from his base camp. He was not “captured.” Did Sgt. Bergdahl believe he was going to be met by a welcoming committee? Yes, he was harshly treated.

However, he did desert his fellow soldiers and put their lives at risk as well. Sgt. Bergdaht will get to come home and receive hugs and kisses from his loved ones.

However, let us not forget that at least two soldiers died while on a search mission for Sgt. Bergdahl. Their parents won’t get to hug their sons, only cling to the American flag that was draped on their coffin.

I am a wife of a veteran who served two tours of duty in Vietnam and value greatly the service of our military.
