Monday letters: S.C. must reach out to the poor

Thank you so much for putting Nicholas Kristof’s Aug. 13 column, “Is a hard life inherited,” front and center on the Forum page. It is time for our state to wake up and understand that our poor, working class most of the time can’t pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

Imagine yourself being born into poverty. Imagine that every door you walk out of or into has more poverty. That your parents scream at you from the frustration of little or no money, long working hours and very little knowledge of how to get out of the rat hole. Then try to judge people caught in the cycle of poverty and all that it brings to their lives.

Each person who turns a blind eye to this situation needs to do volunteer work. If you work with people in such situations, you might get it.
