Gov. Nikki Haley is now airing an ad criticizing Sen. Vincent Sheheen for receiving thousands of dollars from labor unions as campaign contributions, while at the same time she receives hundreds of thousands in contributions from her union, the Republican Governors Association.
We take many things for granted now that were brought about by the brave actions of people who joined together to address their common concerns. A few of them are the 40-hour work week, eliminating child labor and creating overtime pay. We now think of these things as our rights as human beings, but they were brought about by the actions of people who joined together in unions.
Maybe the governor should read the preamble to the Constitution of our country, which begins “We the people of the United States, in order to for a more perfect Union.” Our country was formed as a union. The states joined together as a union to address their common concerns.
The next time you hear our governor’s claim to be “Proud to be known as the union-busting governor,” keep in mind that she is on the executive board of her own union and is getting money from her union for her campaign.
