In Maryann Beverly’s Oct. 6 letter (“GOP stealing voters’ rights”), the voter ID law once again has been misrepresented. If a 90-year-old mother cannot find her birth certificate to allow her to get an ID, there are numerous options available to allow her to vote.
Reasonable people agree that some sort of controls are necessary to ensure voting is done properly. It’s also reasonable to allow some alternatives for hardship cases. The Republicans fought for controls. The Democrats fought for alternatives for those who don’t have an ID.
The law requires an ID but offers options for those who have reasonable impediments to getting one. In the case of Ms. Beverly’s mother, the simplest solution is to sign a statement saying she had a reasonable impediment to getting an ID.
Stop the ridiculous, incorrect argument about how voter ID laws are suppressing voting. All that does is discouraging people from voting. Our democracy rests on citizens becoming informed voters. Voters must stop making decisions by only listening to the pundits. Get the facts so you can form an educated opinion.
