Many thanks to Columbia City Councilman Cameron Runyan for articulating a factual, logical position on why he cannot support the redefinition of marriage. Without using talking points designed to evoke emotion or shut down the open dialogue of an important subject and by providing examples of current events that many people are not aware of, he spoke for many of us with gentleness and respect.
Is marriage a feature of reality that we discover and describe, or is it a cultural construct we can redefine when society chooses? If you choose the latter, with marriage being flexible, what is the principled argument against polygamy, polyandry, polyamory or any other creative combination? “Marriage equality” would be a reality and no longer a slogan used as propaganda to mislead supporters and silence those opposed to their point of view.
