Everyone agrees that immigration reform is badly needed — sooner rather than later. We understand that who gets credit is important. We understand that some in Congress don’t like the president. Americans expect differing positions. We all know nothing is going to move forward unless differing positions are able to compromise.
Of course we can refuse to comprise. We all understand that stagnation is an option, but it’s unacceptable. It is time to put personality, ethnicity and ego behind us and do what’s needed for America. Allowing immigration to distract us is a disservice to everyone, liberal as well as conservative. Political bickering means immigration reform won’t happen. Bickering is what school children do, and has no legitimate place in our government.
Let us not fall into the trap of believing that the issues are resolved when we assign blame. However comforting blaming may feel, it is the ultimate futility. America can’t afford to waste its deliberative resources. Anyone who feels they have the one and only answer doesn’t live in the real world, and that is a luxury we can’t afford.
