Recent letters to the editor in The State have criticized President Obama unfairly. If these letter writers watch only Fox news, their opinions will be very biased. For example, when Obama took office in January 2009, the Dow Jones industrial average was at 7,749; today it is around 17,800. The unemployment rate was 7.8 percent; today it is 5.8 percent. Gross Domestic Product growth was -5.4 percent; today it is +3.5 percent. The deficit as a percentage of GDP was 9.8; today it is only 2.8. Consumer confidence was 37.7 percent; today it is 94.5 percent.
The hawks in Congress, like Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham, are pressuring the president to send U.S. ground troops to Iraq. Obama is showing courage and leadership by resisting efforts to re-start President Bush’s war, which conservative columnist George Will called “the biggest foreign policy mistake in the history of our country.” Thanks to Obamacare, 10 million Americans have health insurance who did not have any before.
Let’s be fair to President Obama and give him credit where credit is due.
