On Nov. 29, ESPN announcers for the South Carolina-Clemson football game made a number of gratuitous remarks totally inconsistent with the spirit of friendly competition, sportsmanship and civility one would expect during an athletic contest between two respectable universities.
This was especially uncalled for given the unfortunate brawl everyone saw during the match-up 10 years ago.
As I recall, the ESPN announcers stated, among other things, that everybody has to have a team to hate and hatred and rivalry games go together and that they liked to see unsportsmanlike conduct in rivalry games.
These tasteless remarks were uncalled for. The young and impressionable fans watching the game could form the wrong attitude based upon those comments.
Our goal should be to make the South Carolina-Clemson game a model for sportsmanship for the entire nation of football fans to notice and admire.
