I remain appalled at further disclosures about former House Speaker Bobby Harrell and his apparent total lack of integrity. I am also very concerned about the 85 legislators who attempted to rewrite laws in his favor, and hope The State publishes those names so that we will know who to watch closely from here on.
Embezzlers serving their sentences in prison must be wishing that Judge Casey Manning had handled their cases and sentenced them to probation for their crimes. Maybe it is time for the voters to elect judges as they do in some other states so that we may avoid the seeming bias shown by Judge Manning and Chief Justice Jean Toal in the Harrell debacle.
To stop legislators from using campaign funds as their personal slush funds, why don’t we require that any unspent funds at the end of each campaign be donated to a worthwhile charity? The Wounded Warriors Project comes to mind, as do several others, where real heroes can be helped.
Newly elected House Speaker Jay Lucas is to be commended for his efforts to fix this very broken system; it will be interesting to see which legislators support his efforts as this new year begins.
