Sarah Jane Byars’ Dec. 18 letter to the editor (“Attempt to outlaw mopeds unfair”) said that she did not support Rep. David Hiott’s proposal to outlaw mopeds.
I can only assume that had she had my experience with a moped, she might change her mind. Two years ago a moped ran a red light and hit my car, causing $2,700 in damage. Being that moped drivers at not required, by South Carolina law, to carry liability insurance nor can they be deemed an uninsured vehicle, I had to pay for the repairs myself.
Under the current bill governing moped use in South Carolina, some of the worst drivers (including some who have lost their driver’s licenses due to DUI), are allowed back on the roadway and are not required to carry any liability insurance. If these individuals were to get their licenses back, they would be required to purchase expensive SR22 insurance to drive a car. What's wrong with this picture? Please, Rep. Hiott, get this bill passed.
